And there is a cat. In Haruki's novels, cats are not merely part of the background. They are something that demands attention. Whenever a cat appears in a scene, the story shifts slightly. The tempo changes, the atmosphere transitions, or the protagonist begins to speak in a different way. If you gather all the dozens of cats scattered throughout Haruki's novels, a consistent philosophy emerges. To him, cats were more than just animals. But what exactly were they?

Haruki's Own Cats

Before opening the novels, it is only right to start with the author's own story. Haruki Murakami genuinely loves cats. This is a fact repeatedly confirmed across his essays and interviews. Stories of his own cats appear sporadically in his essay collections, such as If Our Language Were Whiskey, A Distant Drumming, and others. He lived with several cats and held specific memories of each one. However, something stands out in Haruki’s cat stories: he never idealizes or sentimentalizes them. He calmly observes what the cat did, what its personality was like, and how it existed—almost like a researcher studying them. And that observation finds its way into his novels. Haruki once said in an interview: "Cats teach humans something. Not with words, but just by being there." This sentence is the key to understanding the cats in his fiction.

Hear the Wind Sing — The First Cats

In his later novels, cats emerge as the symbol of this very loss. The debut work built that prototype. When a cat appears in a Haruki novel, the protagonist is almost always alone in some sense. It is isolation, not just solitude—the feeling of being disconnected even when surrounded by people. A cat perfectly understands that state, because a cat always exists in that exact same way.

Norwegian Wood — The Sensation of a Cat in a Novel Without Cats

That distinction is crucial to Haruki.

Kafka on the Shore — Nakata's Cats

The novel where cats appear most directly and centrally is Kafka on the Shore (2002). One of the main characters, Nakata, is an elderly man. After a bizarre incident in his childhood, he lost the ability to read and his memory is impaired. However, Nakata has a special ability: he can talk to cats. Nakata works in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, searching for lost cats. As he wanders around, he speaks directly with the feline locals. The cats tell Nakata the whereabouts of missing cats and share stories about their owners. These cat conversation scenes are some of the most beautiful and strange parts of the novel. The cats all have distinct personalities—a talkative cat, a philosophical cat, an indifferent cat. Their conversations with Nakata are more honest and strike closer to the core than most conversations between humans. Why is Nakata the only one who can talk to cats? Haruki does not explicitly explain. But there is an implication: the childhood incident left Nakata lingering somewhere between "this world" and the "other world." He is a person who doesn't fully belong to either side. The same is true for cats. Cats are always on the boundary. They live in the human world but do not fully belong to it. Because of this shared liminality, Nakata and the cats can connect.
